Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook met with China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua in Beijing on Thursday, January 10, giving strong indication that an agreement between both companies could be reached. Apple can capture a huge market share if it joins hands with China Mobile.

The details of the meeting were not made public due to a confidentiality agreement signed between the parties, but Reuters quoted Li Jun, a China Mobile spokesman, confirming the meeting took place. In an email statement, the spokesman said:

“In the morning, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook visited China Mobile’s headquarters. China Mobile’s Chairman Xi Guohua and Tim Cook discussed matters of cooperation.”

As far as subscribers are concerned, China Mobile is the largest mobile carrier, and Apple’s agreement with the former can help the latter capture the market that is currently captured by its rival, Samsung. If an agreement is reached, it will be another step from Apple towards expanding its consumer base. Tim Cook, who has replaced Steve Jobs at Apple, has been reaching out to a broader audience, making Apple’s products accessible to more people.

There are rumours doing the rounds that Apple is planning on launching a cost-effective iPhone that might cost somewhere around $100 to $150. This action and Apple’s intent to further expand its market in China show that the California-based company is quite serious about recapturing the market that has been occupied by its competitors. Further developments regarding Apple’s plan to expand its market are expected to surface in the next few weeks.
