Google search has become an indispensable part of our everyday lives and the search engine is used to look up varying types of information. The search giant’s other services like Google Maps are also very popular and with its street view and 3D mapping features the map service has become even more user friendly. A lot of travelers use Google maps to plan trips or view destinations before they actually go there. Some people even utilize the amazing service for virtual tourism. It is not hard to see that the most popular and most sot after locations in a country can be derived from the search queries on Google Maps. A recent report by the Toronto Sun shared that Google’s spokesman Aaron Brindle told the newspaper that the most searched Canadian destination over the course of four months was Niagara Falls.

Brindle did not talk about exact figures but stated that Niagra Falls was the clear leader in search on Google Maps for Canada during the period from May to September. The Google spokesperson did share that the second place was taken up by Ontario’s Wasaga Beach. Brindle told the newspaper that the reason Google did not share exact figures was because the nature of the data was very complex. However, he did say that Canadian’s averaged over four billion searches every month and a large number were on Google Maps. He went on to say that, “We use data from multiple sources, including insights for search and internal data tools. We also filter out spam and repeat queries to build out lists that best reflect the spirit of the times.”

Mayor of Niagara Falls, Jim Diodati, was excited that his town was such a popular search term in Canada but also mentioned that he was not surprised. He pointed at the global appeal of the tourist spot and a number of events that have put the location in the global limelight over the past year. He pointed at Nik Wallenda’s tightrope walk which was broadcast all over the world and the upcoming Red Bull Crashed Ice event in November.

The mayor proudly stated that, “We take for granted sometimes how famous Niagara Falls is. The brand name is enormous. Everyone has heard of Niagara Falls. It’s the most famous city in Canada; sometimes it’s more famous than Canada itself.” The Google search data also seems to support a 30% upswing in tourism to the region, especially from the United States.
