Apple has served the education sector in different parts of the world quite nicely by introducing iTunes U, which allows its users to share educational details with each other in over 150 countries. Educators create their own iTunes U courses and aid their junior colleagues when they teach their respective classes.

The success of iTunes U can be determined by a recent milestone that Apple has achieved. According to the technology giant, iTunes U content downloads have topped one billion all over the world. Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said of this achievement:

“It’s inspiring to see what educators and students of all types are doing with iTunes U. With the incredible content offered on iTunes U, students can learn like never before―there are now iTunes U courses with more than 250,000 students enrolled in them, which is a phenomenal shift in the way we teach and learn.”

One of the highlighting features of iTunes U app is that more than 60 per cent downloads originated from outside the U.S., hence bridging the gap between educators in different parts of the world. Professor Dan Stokols of University of California said:

“Because of iTunes U, I have been able to introduce students and colleagues in China to research on the links between chronic multi-tasking, information overload and stress; discuss research publications and degree programs with students in Europe; and exchange information about the influence of neighborhood design on community levels of physical activity and obesity with students in Australia. The opportunity to impact so many students who are gaining interest in environmental psychology by taking my free course on iTunes U has been highly rewarding and gratifying for me as an educator and learner.”

For students and teachers alike, the iTunes U app provides a creative and unique platform to aid learning. The significant achievement to note here is that many educators offer free courses and hence senior professors in different universities can help their junior colleagues teaching in high schools. Also, the ability to give access of the app to the students in different parts of the world adds to the efforts of development of education sector worldwide.

“Students are engaged and working hard as they use the incredible amount of information at their fingertips in a way that is meaningful and impactful. I love the way iTunes U provides a roadmap to take students beyond what a typical lesson or lecture could achieve,” said Chrissy Boydstun, a teacher from Mansfield Independent School District in Texas.
