Thanks to ARM, smartphones and tablets will soon possess visual graphics technology that rivals that of the highest end game consoles such as X Box 360 and PlayStation 3. The advancement comes by way of the company’s latest series of Mali T600 designs, whose current iterations can be found in the Samsung Galaxy S III among other devices.

The new line of GPUs (graphics processing units) will feature quad core technology that can be scaled up to a whopping eight cores. According to Engadget (UK’s own), such units would deliver at minimum 50 per cent more performance from the same amount of silicon and an equal amount of power.

What should be even more exciting for mobile gaming aficionados is ARM’s decision to dedicate a minute area of silicon to running an entirely new graphical compression codec known as Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression (ASTC). The aforementioned would negate the current requirement for developers to choose different codecs to achieve various levels of texture compression for desktop and mobile platforms.  The technology would create a new standard and make it far easier for developers to create games and apps that run as intended on various platforms.

GPUs are used in Smart TVs as well as mobile devices, making the impacted industries large and growing. Devices based on the T600 series are expected to be released next year and will more than likely change our devices’ capabilities forever.
