Popular micro blogging site, Twitter, stated on February 1 that it had notices “unusual access patterns” during the week. The company claims that hackers may have gained access to 250,000 user’s data. Twitter went on to say that it had unearthed “one live attack and [was] able to shut it down in process moments later.” However, the site still believes that the hackers were able to get access to important information like usernames, email addresses, session tokens and encrypted/salted versions of passwords.
In order to stop any further damage from the hack , Twitter has reset user passwords and revoked session tokens for all of the allegedly effected accounts. The holders of these accounts will also get an email from the company that gives details of the situation.
Twitter also claimed that, “This attack was not the work of amateurs, and we do not believe it was an isolated incident. The attackers were extremely sophisticated, and we believe other companies and organizations have also been recently similarly attacked. For that reason we felt that it was important to publicize this attack while we still gather information, and we are helping government and federal law enforcement in their effort to find and prosecute these attackers to make the Internet safer for all users.”
Twitter has also asked other users to change their passwords and make them stronger and less likely to be hacked. The company stated, “If you are not using good password hygiene, take a moment now to change your Twitter passwords.”
