Toronto based eBook seller, Kobo recently announced that they would soon be launching their own tablet called the Arc. The Kobo device was meant to help the Canadian firm take on competition like Amazon‘s Kindle. The initial announcement was that the tablet will have a 1.5 GHz dual core processor and will run on the Android OS 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The expectation was that the 7 inch tablet would eventually be upgraded to the newer Jelly Bean operating system in due time. Kobo had planned to release the Arc in two versions of 8 GB and 16GB for $199.99 and $249.99 respectively, however all those plans seem to have changed quickly as Amazon announced that they would be launching the highly anticipated Kindle Fire HD.

The latest news being reported by Mobile Syrup is that Kobo has completely scrapped the 8 GB version of the Arc and have also revised the pricing to make their tablets more competitive. The Canadian firm is also releasing a 64GB version which is expected to hit the market by November. The 16 GB Arc will be priced at $199.99, the 32GB devices will be $249.99 and the 64GB are to be stickered at $299.99. The tablets are currently ready for pre-order from the Kobo website.

The Arc tablets will be different from other devices because of the Tapestries setup that Kobo hopes will immerse the user into the content available on their site. Wayne White, General Manager of Devices at Kobo explains, “We designed the Kobo Arc to let people focus on the music, eBooks, movies, website and applications they love rather than on the hardware they hold in their hand – though that is amazingly designed as well. We’ve accomplished this by offering consumers more – more storage, more customization, more choice – all in the powerful, attractive and vivid Android 4.0 Kobo Arc.”
