Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 release has been the talk of the technology world for the past couple of days. The revamped operating System is expected to tie in smartphones, tablets and PC’s all into one unified platform. In order to catch up with rivals and exploit the full potential of Windows 8, Microsoft broke with tradition and announced the release of its own hardware product called the Surface which many of you have already seen or heard about (see here). The Microsoft tablet is seen by many as the Redmond-based software developer’s attempt to counter Apple’s rise to dominance in the industry. Early adopters in Canada had a chance to pre-order the Surface tablet when it went live several days ago. According to the online store the 32GB version without a cover is selling for $519 Canadian dollars and the version with the cover and 64GB is retailing for $719.

The initial release of the new device was only available in some countries including Canada, Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States. In the US the 32GB version without the cover had brisk sales and sold out within a few hours. It has now been revealed that Canada has followed suit and Microsoft’s Canadian site is stating that the “32 GB without Black Touch Cover – Temporarily sold out.” The maker of Windows 8 has not given out any sales numbers yet but it might be encouraging for the firm to see that it has sold out some of its product quickly.

Microsoft has been planning for the release of its OS and tablet for quite some time and rumors indicated that the company ordered 3 to 5 million Surface tablets for sale in the last quarter of 2012 (TQ was on it). With Windows 8 release date of October 26 looming large the pre-order section of Microsoft’s site has been opened up. However, users can also buy the Surface tablet at the company stores around Canada or the many pop-up- stores expected to be put up during the holiday season.
