3D printing is an incredible innovation that uses a process known as additive manufacturing to literally build three dimensional objects from the ground up layer by layer using specialized machinery. Although not new in theory, the advancements that are being made in the field have allowed for some incredible 3D modelling and construction.

The video below is an incredible presentation made by Behrokh Khoshnevis, a USC professor who is using 3D printing to change lives for the better. One such project is the creation of artificial limbs that are being used to aid people live more independent lives. The limbs are made to form a mobile plastic exoskeleton that replicates arms and legs to scale. If you are able to create a design using animation modeling software of computer aided design, it can be built in 3D.

Another incredible use of the technology is the literal full scale construction of a home. According to TheNextWeb, a home can be “printed” using a concrete-type material in as little as 20 hours. According to the article and Mr. Khoshnevis, larger versions can be built to withstand three times the PSI force of a standard home’s walls as well as larger family dwellings such as full apartment complexes or full neighbourhoods.

If you have 12 minutes, take the time to watch the following and fathom its awesomeness. Skip to 3:45 for a look at the home building.
