4-D Cinema Coming to a Theatre Near You?

Asia’s largest theatre chain, owned and operated by Korean conglomerate the CJ Group is said to be dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s on an agreement on our end of the pond to bring a new dimension to cinematic experience of the Americas. According to an LA Times article, the agreement with a yet unnamed American cinema chain will bring the technology to over 200 theatres in theU.S. over the next five years in an attempt to bring more people to the movies by offering a truly unique experience.

 

So what exactly would the 4th generation be comprised of? It would include moving seats, back ticklers, strobe lights and air systems that expel odours that all act in concert to enhance all that is going on within the movie. Although many will remain sceptical of the enhancements as well as the estimated $8 increase in ticket prices, there is no denying that the 4-D experience has been popular in CJ’s testing.

 

According to the company, moviegoers inSouth Korea,ThailandandMexicohave been coming out in droves and providing very positive feedback for such films as “The Avengers” and “Prometheus”. Although the majority of the roll out is expected to occur around major cities likeLos AngelesandNew York, one can’t help but wonder if Canadian cities are next.

 

The second largest American cinema chain is AMC, which operates many theatres across Canada while always being at the forefront of integrating new technology such as 3-D and IMAX. It might not be long before the next dimension of movie watching is blowing a burnt rubber smell onto your popcornCanada.
