Earlier this month, RIM announced the introduction and upcoming release (TQ was on it) of its latest tablet device, an LTE powered PlayBook that would bring the much maligned device maker up to speed with its competitors (in terms of hardware). The latest PlayBook launched nation-wide yesterday through the usual suspects.
According to Mobile Syrup, the device is as cheap as many would think or hope. The LTE PlayBook will be available at its absolute lowest at $350 with a three-year contract from either Bell or Rogers. If you elect to purchase it straight up rather than commit to contract, the device will cost $550 from the aforementioned providers as well as TELUS Mobility.
This rendition of the PlayBook features a 7 inch display, 32GB storage, 1.5GHz dual core processor, 1GB RAM, a 5MP rear camera that provides 1080P video, 3MP front-facing camera as well as RIM’s OS 2.0. New to the device is the addition of an LTE radio.
We sincerely hope that this device does well for RIM and that its current price points are warranted. The company is in a rough patch at the moment, and some good news would certainly serve them well. There is no word as yet regarding the US release date and/or price as the company is electing to focus at home first.
