When Thorsten Heins stepped on the stage to unveil the much-anticipated BlackBerry 10, the crowd that had been eagerly waiting to get a glimpse at the new phone roared in excitement, knowing the wait was finally going to over.

Back in 1999 when Research in Motion launched its first BlackBerry phone, the Canadian-based company did not know that it would have to face a number of ups and downs in the following years that saw the company failing against its competitors.

After years of hard work, planning and management shuffling, the company, which has also adopted the name of its signature product, BlackBerry, launched its much-awaited smartphones yesterday. BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 devices were unveiled simultaneously in six different parts of the world with the company claiming that the new product was “Re-designed, Re-engineered and Re-invented”. The cities where the launch took place included Toronto, London, New York, Dubai, Paris and Johannesburg.

After talking about the history of the company and the efforts that the staff had put in to make the day a memorable one for the company, Heins finally started talking about the operating system and then moved to other features of the new devices.

Meanwhile, he announced changing the name of the company from Research in Motion to BlackBerry. A number of critics were also present at different locations to witness the launch of the product that would make or break the company’s future. Although it is too soon to judge the product, the BB10 has so far received mixed response from the reviewers. However, there is no denying that the company’s efforts to totally revamp its image have somewhat paid off. The fiscal year will tell how well the product is received in the market, but for now the new BlackBerry is going to stay in the limelight.
