Microsoft Planning To Invest $348 Million More In Virginia Data Center

Microsoft is experiencing increased data center needs like many other technology company’s around the world. That is why the maker of Windows announced that it is looking to spend $348 million to add to data centers in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The investment will yield two more facilities and increase Microsoft’s capabilities. Reports from The Republic state that Virginia Governor, Bob McDonnell, will help the local economy. Microsoft’s investment int he area should produce 30 new jobs. All the money for the project is not coming from the world’s largest software maker and the The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission has also chipped in $2 million. The Governor’s Opportunity Fund also contributed with a $200,000 grant to the county.

 

The data center that is planned to be expanded was initially built in 2010 for a total cost of $499 million. Microsoft had to dole out another $150 million to expand the location in 2011.

 

Microsoft Data Center Services general manager, Christian Belady, talked about the benefits of the expansion an claimed it would help increase “computing capacity, software capabilities and server utilization.”

 

Microsoft had been rapudly expanding its data centers around the US and in April of 2012 the company created a new center in Wyoming for $112 million. Soon after that two more data centers were brought online for the company’s Azure cloud computing project.

 

Competitors are also expanding their data center. Google recently spent $600 million in South Carolina to increase the size of a Berkeley County data center.
