Super Bowl is not just about two teams competing for the championship. It has much more flavour that attracts a number of people and companies, and generates huge revenue. Many high-budget movies release their trailers during the championship game, while other companies also pay heavily to promote their products.

When BlackBerry announced to present a commercial during Super Bowl, everybody knew that it would be related to the BlackBerry 10 the company has launched recently and is yet to even hit all the main markets across the globe. But what nobody knew or anticipated was the content of the commercial.

During the Super Bowl matchup between San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens on February 03, the BlackBerry ad stunned the viewers as the company tried to impress the audience by highlighting what the phone cannot do. The 30-second commercial featured a person coming out of a store playing with his BlackBerry Z10 device.

When he swipes the screen his sweater catches fire and the next time he does it his lower body turns into elephant legs. The next swipe makes him burst into colourful powder and the final swipe converts a crashing truck into many rubber duckies. At the end of the commercial, an announcer says: “In 30 seconds it’s quicker to show what it can’t do.”

A story by The Canadian Press published at Macleans quotes BlackBerry chief marketing officer Frank Boulben in a released statement.

“In our debut appearance at the Super Bowl we knew that it wasn’t feasible to communicate the rich experience of BlackBerry 10. We wanted to let people know that BlackBerry is back and that BlackBerry 10 is worth checking out.”
