BlackBerry recently launched its next generation BlackBerry 10 mobile operating systems and related devices in a global launch event. The devices and BB10 have been highly anticipated and many observers have been waiting to see how the new products from the struggling Canadian manufacturer perform in their initial days so that they can forecast future demand. BlackBerry’s home market of Canada has seen a very positive outlook from customers about the new devices and even though the country is not BlackBerry’s largest market, it is a good indicator of what to expect in other countries. The Waterloo-based company is probably excited to know BB10 devices have done excellent business in Canada. The company’s Chief Executive Officer and leader during the turn around, Thorsten Heins,  made an official statement about the today BB10 launch that took place on February 5 by saying, “yesterday was the best day ever for the first day of a launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone” in Canada.  According to the stats provided by BlackBerry, the company was able to sell 50% more smartphones than any other BlackBerry release in the country.

Something that may be even more exciting for investors and the company is the fact that the firm ended up doing even better in the United Kingdom. Heins stated that, “In the UK, we have seen close to three times our best performance ever for the first week of sales for a BlackBerry smartphone.”

If some people believe the BlackBerry CEO may be fudging his numbers to get the market excited, Rogers has also given out numbers that confirm Heins statement. According to the major Canadian telecommunication provider, it has been able to sell more BlackBerry devices on BB10 launch day than any other day in its history. Rogers even mentioned that some location ran out of inventory on the first day.

The launch of BB10 has been delayed many times before the big day came in early 2013. Many believe that the success of the new platform and the devices that run on it are key to the reemergence of BlackBerry as a player in the smartphone sector. The company has been lagging in developed markets like the US and Europe because of some very tough competition from Apple and Samsung. Currently most smartphone devices run on either Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android while BlackBerry makes up only a small portion of the market. If BB10 is successful it will help the company not only retain previous users but also add new ones.
