Market researcher, Canalys, recently concluded a study and went public with the results that have placed Apple at the top of PC makers list because the Cupertino-based company has overpowered its rivals by capturing a smashing 20 percent share in the market. Apple was able to achieve this spot by shipping 27 million units of PCs in the final quarter of 2012. Whereas Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Lenovo were able to grasp number two and three positions respectively in Canalys report, as both companies managed to ship about 15 million units of PCs in Q4. However, since HP send out slight more units than Lenovo therefore it was able to get a hold of the number two position.
Samsung is a surprising entrant in the top five PC makers of the world according to Canalys. The South Korean manufacturer not only managed to clutch a place among the top five companies, but it also snatched the fourth spot from Dell. This seems unlikely because Samsung has not been very prominent in the manufacturing of PCs or laptops. The reason the maker of the Galaxy SIII got a such a boost in the Canalys study is that the market research firm counted tablets or slates as PCs. This Gave both Apple and Samsung a boost in their overall numbers.
Today counting tablets as PCs should not be considered absurd because modern slates can perform a lot of functions which were earlier limited to laptops and desktop computers. Consumers have started using tablets just like personal computers and Samsung is producing more and more slates with the passage of time. Although, the multinational corporation has never remained a big name in offering typical PCs, but when it comes to Android based tablets the company is surely doing well.
According to Canalys, “Samsung, buoyed by strong pad shipments, had its first quarter in the top five, shipping 11.7 million PCs giving it a 9% share.”
Of these 11.7 million units, 7.6 million were slates alone, which show a whopping 226 percent increase in the supply of Samsung. After Samsung, US based Amazon has also made a name in supplying “pads”, as company’s shipments are increasing by 18 percent on a yearly basis and currently tallies around 4.6 million.
However, none of the aforementioned companies were able to put up as solid numbers as Apple managed to do so thanks to the strong demand of the iPad Mini. According to the Canalys estimate, units of the smaller version of the iPad were more than half of this Cupertino company’s total tablet shipments. But still there is some room and California-based company can do even better than this.
The market researcher stated that, “Apple’s growth in the pad segment was driven by strong demand for the iPad mini. Its overall shipments, however, were hampered by supply issues.”
Therefore, “Despite record shipments, Q4 saw Apple’s pad share dip to 49%, becoming the first quarter it has not controlled over half the market.”
