The “All Facebook” recently reported that Facebook is testing out out ‘Buy Tickets’ button in the social networks Event Pages. Facebook is reportedly helping its users sell tickets to events which shows the technology firm is looking to move into the online ticketing sector. The Buy option is still in the testing phase and when a user clicks on it they are sent to a third party page to make the purchase. For now Facebook is not processing the transaction through their own platform. The feature should help administrators of Facebook event pages to promote ticket sales and hopefully boost revenue from that activity. CNET received confirmation from Facebook about the new feature and a Facebook representative added that the new button is a simple replacement for the previous bit.ly link. Users placed the link in their event page and directed users to another site which was chosen by the event promoter.

For now the Buy Tickets buttons seem to be just a pretty replacement for the text links in use before. They may help users attract the attention of the reader and help create sales on a third party site. The Buy button does however point at Facebook’s intent of trying to create new ways to generate revenue. The social network has been looking to make its social network into a commerce hub and has tried several different features. If Facebook wants it may be able to leverage its events page into a ticket-buying platform that could help create another profit stream for the company.

Currently Facebook has  1 billion monthly active users making it the world’s largest social network. Currently Facebook is free to users and it is very likely that this will stay that way. Facebook’s huge user base provides a wealth of information that makes its very appealing to advertisers who can use the data stored on Facebook’s servers about users to deliver targeted ads. The sites revenue model involve using ads and the company has been very successful at providing a targeted ad service but the company has been looking at monetizing its services in other ways. Facebook has stated in the past that it wants its platform to be used as a commerce center and some of the moves by the company including the testing of the Buy Ticket button show that the firm is serious about its goals.
