Although the first generation of Microsoft Surface tablets boasts a 10.6 inch display, it does not mean that the company is not at all interested in producing this device in various sizes. This notion was given by the CFO of Microsoft, Peter Klein, when he took the stage on Wednesday, February 13 at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference. Addressing the audience Klein said that Microsoft is prepared, keen and ready to bring in an array of latest form factors to the mobile market. The multinational company is ready to produce a small size Surface tablet just like Apple’s iPad Mini as well as a larger version of current models, but whether they pick both or any one of these routes will be decided by their customers.

Talking about extending Windows to various sizes of devices, Klein said, “We’re set up for that. The notion of flexibility and scalability of the operating system is intrinsic to our strategy.”

The reason why Klein said so was that both Windows Phone 8 and Windows are developed from the same seed. Therefore, apps that work with them can be adjusted as per the size of the display without any trouble.

Klein said, “We can have the same core code base driving form factors from four inches all the way up to 27-inch ones and everything in between. So I think we are well set up to respond to demand as we see it. We can deliver a versatile set of experiences across form factors, whether they’re four-inch, five-inch, seven-inch, 10-inch or 13-inch.”

This is a wide range of device sizes that Klein mentioned at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference, but it is expected that Microsoft would most probably produce a 7-inch slate, a size that Apple has touched by introducing iPad Mini. This indication was given by the CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, who told CRN that his company will challenge Apple in every segment of the market.

His exact words were that, “We are not going to let any piece of this [go to Apple]. Not the consumer cloud. Not hardware/software innovation. We are not leaving any of that to Apple by itself. Not going to happen! Not on our watch!”

This clearly indicates that Microsoft is working on readying the next gen of Surface tablet in different sizes or at least in 7-inch size. So buckle up to see a smaller version of this colourful Windows based tablet.
