BlackBerry launched its much anticipated all-touch Z10 smartphone on the 5th of this month all over Canada and the United Kingdom. The response from  customers towards the brand new device was overwhelming as the CEO of BlackBerry, Thorsten Heins said in a statement that, “In Canada, yesterday was the best day ever for the first day of a launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone. In fact, it was more than 50% better than any other launch day in our history in Canada. In the UK, we have seen close to three times our best performance ever for the first week of sales for a BlackBerry smartphone.” Numerous telecom carriers also stated that there is great demand for the Z10. The price of the new BB10 all-touch phone in Canada is about $600 outright but despite being one of the higher priced cell phones it is doing pretty well. However, the question that arises at this point in time is that how much the BlackBerry Z10 actually costs the company. To determine the answer of this question TechInsights disassembled the new Z10. After breaking it down MobileSyrup reported that TechInsights learned the following details:

“Display and Glass (4.2-inches): $26.50

Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 SoC processor $23.50

Cameras (8MP back camera and 2MP front-facing): $15.00

16GB Flash storage: $9.00

Other components (battery, communication chips, RAM): $21.00

Remaining materials such as the plastic casing: $59.00”

After adding the price of each component mentioned above, TechInsights found that the total cost of making a Z10 is just $154, whereas BlackBerry is selling it for $446 more than what it actually costs. In addition to this, TechInsights also noted that the specs for the Z10 are quite alike the Samsung Galaxy S III. However, the cost calculated above is of Z10’s components only and it does not include the expenditures that BlackBerry incurred over the research, design and the marketing of this device. Therefore, it is not fair to say that BlackBerry is selling this new smartphone at a profit of more than 50 percent.

Besides these expenses, BlackBerry has invested lot of time in convincing enterprise clients and telecom carriers around the world, so it could not only make the launch of its BB10 platform successful but also win back the market share it has lost to different Android based handsets of Samsung and Apple’s iPhone. BlackBerry, which recently changed its name from Research In Motion, has been struggling with the smartphone market and hopes to make a come back with its BB10 platform.
