After making its debut on February 5th the BlackBerry Z 10 was able to capture quite a few headlines, but later nothing positive related to the handset from the Waterloo-based company came into sight. In fact, sometime after its launch a Canaccord Genuity analyst claimed that the BlackBerry Z10 shortage in some stores was not the result of high demand, but it happened because BlackBerry rolled it out in limited numbers. In addition the analysts also set the target price of BlackBerry’s stock price at a much lower point than it is currently trading. Shortly after this report from Canaccord, an analyst at Pacific Crest gave a negative view regarding the sales of BlackBerry. As a result of these negative reports and low sales expectations the share price of BlackBerry dropped down by 5 percent on Friday, February 22nd during the trading session.
This seems to be a big blow for the Canadian smartphone manufacturer, as the company had lots of expectations from its brand new BB10 software and hardware. In fact, BlackBerry was looking to make a comeback with the launch of its BB10 platform, so it could not only gain market share it has lost to Samsung and Apple, but also become the third best smartphone maker in the world. However, now it appears that things are not looking too good for the company, as according to Canaccord and Pacific Crest, BlackBerry may sell 300,000 units of Z10 by March 2.
Moreover, Pacific Crest’s analyst also wrote in the report that, “There is no line of sight to profitability; we remains sellers of [shares in] BlackBerry.” The analyst also claimed that BlackBerry will produce not more than 1.5 million units of BlackBerry phones for retailers. This figure was earlier expected to be around the 4 million mark. Nevertheless, at this point in time nothing is official yet because neither the smartphone maker nor any of the retailers have issued the sales record for the Z10.
On the launch day of Z10 BlackBerry and Rogers, a Canadian telecom carrier have stated that they had never sold so many BlackBerry devices on the release date of any of the previous devices from the company. In short, both have created new history by selling more BlackBerry handsets than ever before. Therefore, it is little early to make such claims that BlackBerry has lost the battle.
