The free software community, Mozilla, announced at the 2013 Mobile World Congress that it has extended the range of handsets offering its mobile operating system by partnering with two more mobile phone manufacturers, Huawei and LG. The web-based Firefox OS will now be available to more users in the world according to the Mozilla announcement on Sunday, February 24th after the community presented the new updates related to its mobile operating system. By developing associations with manufacturers like LG and Huawei, Mozilla has surely taken a big step forward and it will help the community to introduce its Firefox OS in emerging markets. Previously, Mozilla just had ZTE and Alcatel as partners.
Mozilla also demoed the first commercial for Firefox OS at the event and made it known that the first batch of handsets bearing the OS will be made available in Colombia, Mexico, Hungary, Brazil, Poland, Montenegro, Venezuela, Serbia and Spain. Moreover, the company has also developed associations with 17 different telecom operators, which will offer its platform to their consumers. The list includes carriers like China Unicom, América Móvil, Etisalat, Deutsche Telekom, KDDI, Hutchison Three Group, Qtel, SingTel, KT, MegaFon, Telecom Italia Group, Smart, Telefónica, Sprint, Telenor, VimpelCom and TMN.
The telecom carriers, which will first launch the Firefox OS based devices, will be Telefónica, Deutsche Telekom, Telenor and América Móvil. Mozilla says that its forthcoming devices will be released by “mid-year” and they will hit other markets later on in the year. TNW reported that “Device manufacturers TCL Communication Technology (under the Alcatel One Touch brand) and ZTE revealed back in January that they will offer the new FirefoxOS, using Snapdragon processors from Qualcomm. ZTE continues to work on its FirefoxOS device, and is said to be mulling a US launch also.”
Apart from this, just like other smartphone manufacturers Mozilla will also look to give its users a wonderful experience by launching the Firefox Marketplace that will offer web-based applications and games that do not require dedicated installations in order to make the Firefox OS more interactive and pleasing. Furthermore, AccuWeather, Cut the Rope, Airbnb, Disney Mobile Games, Box, Facebook, EA games, Soundcloud, Twitter and Nokia’s HERE maps are already available on the platform.
In brief, with the launch of Firefox OS-based handsets, Mozilla is looking to pitch a better substitute for low-level smartphones in emerging markets because it is built around apps that are written by using HTML5.
