Big budget movies have become a global event with mass appeal that has made movie studio millions of dollars in revenue.  However, when it comes to low tier movies things are different because due to the low budget and usually unknown casts their producers do not get many opportunities to showcase the film to large audiences. This was the case with British independent movies but not today as the big gap has narrowed down because low budget films have now got a brand new platform to reach a wider audience. This new platform is Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Live that will now broadcast low budget movies for subscribers and the first film that will be made available through this service is going to be ‘Pulp’.

Pulp is basically a comedy movie that describes the story of a struggling comic book publisher who was hired by the police to take down a crime organization. The low budget movie is created by Adam Hamdy who says that the opportunities for British independent films to reach audiences are better than before but he acknowledges that it is getting tougher and tougher for new film makers to showcase their movies.

Hamdy said, “At the top end of the indie film business the UK is still pretty healthy, but it’s the middle tier and the lower budget tier that’s struggling. Where they would have been released straight to DVD, the opportunities for doing that have really declined. Retailers have gone out of business because of the threat of piracy and because of legitimate digital downloading. There has been a decline in the middle to lower budget tier of films that used to get made.”

Hamdy blamed large marketing budget require for commercial success behind the problems of middle and low budet films. He said that, “Theatrical distribution, nowadays, costs on average about £2 million per movie for marketing, prints and advertising. For a film like Pulp, that doesn’t have bankable stars with a track record, it’s a challenge for any distributor to take that gamble.”

However, Microsoft on the other hand is ready to take the gamble, as the multinational corporation has made it known that it will continue to distribute more movies through its Xbox 360 Live platform in the future.

Due to lack of opportunities British independent film industry is struggling at the moment, as during this year Revolver, a UK-based film company has relieved 12 of its 40 employees. But Microsoft is looking to support this industry as the product manager of Xbox Live Pav Bhardwaj said, “It’s a great fit. The film is really well aligned with our audience. All our audience like that sort and types of film and it’s great to support British talent.”
