A recent report showed that the Chinese market has an over abundance of Android based handsets and now according the latest update South Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung has become the number one phone seller in the country. This was the first time that Samsung has been able to become the top smartphone seller in China, as the company has sold roughly three times more smartphones than what it managed to sell during the last quarter of 2011. To be precise Samsung has sold 30.06 million smartphones in the last quarter of 2012, whereas back in 2011 during the same period the Galaxy smartphone maker sold 10.9 million units. Overall it was a significant increase in the number of sales and Samsung also boosted its market share in China from 12.4 percent (2011) to 17.7 percent (2012).

This was certainly remarkable feat that Samsung has made as China is the largest smartphone market in the world, considering the fact that the Galaxy S III maker has started selling its mobile phones in China in 2009. However, in contrast to Samsung, Nokia’s market share in China dropped quietly drastically, as its 29.9 percent market share in 2011 has shrunk to 3.7 percent by the end of last year. That was a major decline and as a result of this Nokia has not only lost its first place, but now it stands at the last spot (7th position) in the charts.

As far as the rest of the field is concerned the second spot now belongs to Lenovo that now holds 13.2 percent market share in China’s smartphone market, while Apple came third with 11 percent market share. Huawei managed to beat the local smartphone maker Coolpad with 9.9 percent market share that is just 0.2 percent more than the Chinese mobile phone maker.

Nevertheless, at this point in time it cannot be said for sure that whether Samsung will able to maintain its position in the future or not because different factories in China are swiftly producing devices that bears modified editions of Ice Cream Sandwich that are a lot cheaper when compared to imported handsets.

Moreover, Apple is also reportedly gearing up to bring a cheaper version of iPhone that is expected to be launched sometime during summer. According to the report California-based tech giant is rolling the cheaper version of iPhone out because the company wants to increase its market share in China, India and developing countries, where Android phones are dominating the market.
