Video hosting platform, Vimeo, allows users to upload and share videos with any number of friends or the public in a simple format that makes it very easy to use. The company has recently launched it own on demand video service that allows users the chance to purchase and stream video content like movies, TV shows, and short films. Canadians can utilize the service along with other markets where the service is available. Vimeo revealed another feature about its on demand service on Tuesday, March 12 at the SXSW Interactive and Film festival where the firm stated that all of its users would be able to take advantage of Vimeo On Demand. They did add that the content producers would have a feature that would allow them to confine the viewing of their videos to geographical areas of their choosing. Canadian users should be happy to know that the many films available through the service are accessible in Canada already.

Blake Whitman, vice president of creative development, was quoted in a press release as saying, “We are proud of this first phase of Vimeo On Demand, and we’re already working on another suite of creator-focused features to release in the near future.”

Other competitors in the field include Google owned YouTube. The popular video streaming service started offering purchases and movie rentals in Canada almost two years ago. The YouTube service has seen growth and users can buy a new release in HD for $4.99. They can also buy the movie for $19.99.

The YouTube content can be considered more main stream because a majority of the content is Hollywood movies an high-profiles films. Vimeo has chosen to go another way and has a lot of content that promotes independent films. This gives these artists a major platform to share their content with the world and a business model that gives them a major chunk of the business. Vimeo keeps 10% of all income generated while the content maker gets a nice 90 percent cut.
The price ranges for YouTube are pretty consistent across the board but Vimeo On Demand has a different approach. The video makers have the ability to decide the price for rentals and purchases on their own. This has given many videos a wide range of prices with the high end touching the 9 dollar mark for purchase with the lower end at 2 dollars to rent.
Thanks to Vimeo’s integration with many devices including including Google’s Android, Apple’s iOS, AppleTV, Xbox Live and smart TVs users can stream the content to any of these devices.
