Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that analysts should not make predictions about forthcoming devices from the company after examining supply chain information from the California-based tech giant. However, that did not work for Cook as DisplaySearch’s analyst Paul Semenza recently came up with a new prediction about the forthcoming products from Apple which are based on the supply chain data of the company. Semenza has claimed that iPad Mini with Retina display is likely to debut in the third or fourth quarter of this year, as he said that, “We’re seeing potential in the third quarter of panel production for a higher-resolution iPad Mini,” while talking to CNET on Friday, March 15th.
Semenza was able to predict the launch of iPad Mini with Retina because he said his data clearly shows 2,048×1,536-pixel density display, which according to him is a “typical step up when you go to Retina.” The current model of iPad Mini has 1,024×768 display. Though, the estimates about the arrival of iPad Mini with Retina display are different from each other, another financial analyst has claimed the iPad Mini II could see first light in the third quarter of 2013.
Apart from the aforementioned details, Semenza also revealed the name of candidates that are likely to manufacture display for the next gen iPad Mini. Semenza said that LG is the strongest candidate to build displays for the device then, there is Japan Display, AUO and Sharp is also in line. Though till this date Japan Display was dedicated to smartphone displays only, as it was making displays for iPhone 5, but now according to Semenza, “they’re showing a desire to get into tablets.”
“And like LG Display, they’re very strong in technologies that allow very high resolution,” he added. Semenza also repeated the challenges that iOS device maker and its display partners will face when they try to fit the new display in the 7.2mm frame of the slim iPad Mini II.
However, Semenza said that it is quite likely an extremely high resolution Google Nexus 7 may make its debut before the arrival of iPad Mini II. At least that’s what the indications are from the Asia-based part providers of the device, says Semenza. He said, “For the Google Nexus 7, we’re seeing the potential for stepping up to a 1,920 x1,200 ‘HD+’ kind of format. We’re seeing panel production possibly in the second quarter.”
