If you think that Google is the only one preparing head mounted display glasses than think again, as a patent filing has revealed that Japanese electronics manufacturer, Sony has also jumped into the ring. Even before Google managed to launch its unique Glass, Sony has revealed its ambitions of developing HMD glasses. The patent was filed on November 14, 2012 and it depicts that Sony perhaps has taken some cues from Google Glass, as the company looks quite close to producing a practical model. However, unlike Google’s Glass, Sony has developed information displays on both sides of its HMD glasses. Plus these lenses are not attached with the traditional bridge and they also have the capability to serve as separate displays, but for the time being it is not more than just a concept.
This was not the first HMD patent from Sony that has revealed its ambitions before. Back in the summer of 2012 a patent was published showing a futuristic device that looked as if it was made for a sci-fi movie. In comparison to the previous patent the latest copyright filing seems more practical approach towards HMD glasses, as the picture shows that Japanese company has built the device by following the design of traditional glasses, whereas the frame is more or less like Google Glass. To the extent the actual pop up display is concerned it sits behind the lenses of the glasses and two displays together with ear buds are attached with the arms of the frame.
The patent did not shed light on the content that will be displayed on the two lenses, but it does say that it will have a 2D interface. In addition to this, the two displays can be moved to several millimetres, which will allow the wearer to adjust it accordingly. It will not be the first time when Sony is going to produce glasses, as the company has a long history with augmented reality units and HMDs, as previously it has developed the HMZ-T2 Personal 3d Viewer for home entertainment. Furthermore, Sony has been working on the HMD glasses for a long time now, as it could be judged from the filing of patents in 2008 and 2009 and the submission of a recent patent that is a continuation of previous copyrights.
So get ready to witness the battle between the two tech giants in a brand new space. However, as there will be just Google and Sony in the new market therefore the battle is not expected to be as intense as it is in the pc or smartphone market.
