NPD DisplaySearch has claimed that Taiwan-based smartphone manufacturer HTC is building a tablet that will be powered by Windows and will be launched sometime later this year. Although the report did not describe whether the alleged HTC tablet will feature Windows 8 Pro or Windows RT, it did clarify that the slate will sport a 10.1 inch screen that will be supplied by LG Display. Moreover, the report also stated that the resolution of the screen will be 1920 x 1080 and its pixel density will be 218ppi. If this report proves true then it would not be the first time that HTC is developing a tablet, as the multinational company has produced its first slate back in 2011. That tablet was called HTC Flyer and it had a 7-inch screen. The Flyer was powered by Google’s Android OS rather than Microsoft Windows and it also had the capability to work with the optional HTC Scribe stylus.
Seven months after the launch of 7-inch HTC Flyer the Taiwanese company released another tablet by the name of HTC JetStream. HTC had taken its second slate to the next level by integrating a 10.1-inch screen and adding support for 4G LTE network from AT&T. The HTC Jetstream was also powered by Android OS and like its 7-inch predecessor the slate also utilized HTC Scribe for some features. However, both tablets from HTC were not warmly greeted by users as a result of that the company failed to secure a deal with Microsoft to produce a Windows-based slate last year. At the time Microsoft was reportedly looking for a strong partner, while at that time HTC had just 1 percent share in the worldwide tablet market.
In addition to this at the time HTC was also struggling in the smartphone space, as a series of its handsets like HTC Rhyme failed to attract buyers. Therefore, HTC was not able to strike a deal with the leading software developing company in the world. Now if the report of a HTC Windows-based tablet proves true then, it will surely be a great feat for the Taiwanese company, as it has made a lot of effort and investment to produce better smartphones, especially in the last year and to some extent has been successful in market.
Therefore, if a HTC Windows powered tablet arrives at this stage there is high probability that it may remain successful in grabbing the attention of users. In fact, some people believe that the new HTC slate has already hit the production line and Pegatron, a contract manufacturer who is reportedly assembling the device has produced the tablet in huge numbers. On the other hand, both Microsoft and HTC declined to comment on the report.
