Waterloo-based ClevrU Corporation has made it known on Tuesday, April 23rd that it has obtained Toronto-based NewMindsets Inc. that was founded by two professors of Schulich School of Business. In the last 10 years, NewMindsets has provided services as well as educational content to 10,000 Schullish students from York University. With this acquisition, ClevrU is looking to incorporate e-teaching pedagogy from the leadership of NewMindsets in its e-teaching. Afterwards the Canadian corporation will present this to York University as a pilot project, which will then provided to millions of students across the world.

NewMindsets’ founder and chairman Drs. Gareth Morgan said on this occasion that, “We created NewMindsets so universities and colleges could deliver online education in a meaningful way. Now that our pedagogy is being completely integrated into ClevrU’s platform, we have the perfect solution to help students learn in a responsive, interactive and user-friendly environment.”

President and CEO of ClevrU Corporation, Mark Arnason said, “ClevrU is excited to partner with New Mindsets and York University. As the online education market matures, universities are looking at superior forms of online and distance learning as new revenue opportunities. ClevrU will provide a solution for educational institutions wishing to develop and deliver effective online courses and effective learning outcomes to students in Canada and internationally.”

He also said that, “Together, we’re going to build a marketplace where students can use a flexible, fully-customizable learning system to gain valuable, personalized learning outcomes.”

The Commercialization office of York University, Innovation York and MaRS Innovation came together to develop commercialization plans for New Mindsets. Of these three forces, MaRS Innovation was the one that has not only organised the first introduction between companies, but also structured an affiliation and later negotiated the ensuing transaction as well.

Earlier in October, talking about the partnership, Dana Fox of ClevrU said that, “Students expect interactivity in online learning models. They want to ask questions, interact with peers and dig deeper into course topics that interest them. We’re excited to collaborate with Jean and Gareth, along with MaRS Innovation and York’s commercialization office, to jointly create a solution that will give educational institutions a powerful, personalized solution to capture the online learning sector.”

Adding more details Morgan also said at the time that, “We were missing a mobile e-teaching platform to support our research and model. With ClevrU’s analytics to examine how students are learning and interacting on a real-time basis, we’ll have all the necessary tools to optimize both our pedagogy and their platform for mobile devices, tablets, laptops and computers.”
