For those out there that have yet to be introduced to OUYA, you are in for a treat. The Rubik’s Cube sized gaming console, which is based on the Android platform and created by Boxer8 has aspired to be the next generation of gaming consoles.
According to their Kickstarter page, the idea behind the console sprang from the observation (and fact) that many game developers had begun to focus on the expansive growth and profits that were happening in mobile gaming, leaving console gaming sorely lacking creativity and traction.
Basing the device off of the Android platform literally allows anyone with the console to become a game maker. Priced at $99, the concept and its potential were enough to set a Kickstarter crowd funding record of $8,596,475 from 63,000 plus backers in a month’s time.
Since then however, OUYA has set its sights on becoming more than a simple gaming console and expanding its offering to include anything and everything that will bring the full internet experience to the television.
The company behind the project has reached agreements with internet radio provider TuneIn to bring 70,000 stations to the device’s platform, iHeartRadio for another 1,000 stations as well as VEVO for the integration of HD music videos. Game makers NAMCO BANDAI and OnLive has also buddied up with Jambox as well as open source media players XBMC and Plex. All of the aforementioned create a formidable list of allies.
We think OUYA is incredible and industry stalwarts Sony (PlayStation), Microsoft (X-Box) and even Apple TV should be weary of the little box with vast potential. Check out the user interface demo below.
