After announcing a $700 million investment for Alberta, Canadian telecom carrier TELUS declared on Tuesday, May 28th that it is all set to invest $17 million throughout Manitoba during this year in order to give users in the province the most advanced and fastest wireless technology known as 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution). TELUS has already launched its 4G LTE network in various parts of Canada and now with this announcement it is looking to further extend its coverage map.
On this occasion, the Vice-President of TELUS, Michael Sangster said in statement that, “This year’s $17 million investment brings our customers in Manitoba the fastest and most reliable wireless technology available in the world. Whether our clients are at home, at work or on the go we have the right tools for them, be it the latest smartphones for consumers or blazing fast wireless networks to enhance productivity for businesses. With more than 150 TELUS team members in the province and our investment of $380 million in new technology and operations since 2000, we are proud to be contributing to the digital economy of Manitoba.”
Sangster also said that, “At TELUS, we give where we live, recognizing that our investment in local organizations through donations and volunteering is as important as our investment in technology and infrastructure. Notably, since 2000 our more than 150 team members in Manitoba have helped us give more than $1.8 million to local charitable and community organizations, including the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba who in turn supports the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, Cancercare Manitoba, the Red Cross and the Dr. Goodbear Golf Classic, where TELUS is the platinum sponsor for the third year in a row.”
At this point in time, MTS is the only wireless carrier that is offering LTE services to the people of Manitoba. MTS started offering this service to locals in the fall of last year. So this makes TELUS the second telecom carrier to offer the service, but soon the competition will get more intense as Bell is also looking to launch its LTE service shortly in Winnipeg by upgrading its network. However, the real competition will begin when Rogers will enter into this space, as Bell will share its 4G network service with TELUS. On the other hand, Rogers is planning to launch its own LTE network during this year.
