A recent survey from the Pew Research Centre has revealed that the number of tablet owners in America is increasing more swiftly than anticipated, as last year the ownership of slates was 18 percent, whereas this year the report indicates that 34 percent of all US citizens, who are over 18 years of age now own a tablet. The New York Times was the first to publish this report, which describes that roughly all demographic groups have indicated that in the last one year tablet ownership has increased. However, things were a lot different when Pew Research Centre first started recording the number of tablet owners back in 2010, as then only three percent of adults used to have a tablet. But today, one third of American adults own a tablet.

The groups which showed the highest growth rate in tablet adoption were college graduates, people between the age of 35 and 44, particularly parents and households, who were earning more than $75,000 per year. Not much difference was observed among the groups when it comes to tablet adoption between racial and ethnic groups or men and women.

A research analyst for Pew Research Centre, Kathryn Zickuhr said that, “One of the things that is especially interesting about tablet adoption compared to some of the patterns of other devices we’ve studied is how these technologies’ growth has played out between different age groups.”

She also said that, “With smartphones, for instance, we’ve seen a very strong correlation with age where most younger adults own smartphones, regardless of income level. But when it comes to tablets, adults in their thirties and forties are now significantly more likely than any other age group to own this device.”

These figures from Pew were not surprising, as previously several reports had already indicated that the sales of PCs and notebooks are going down with the passage of time and in contrast to it sales of tablets are increasing. One reason behind the increase in the sales of tablet is that the slates are much lighter and easy to carry as compared to notebooks and PCs therefore it enables users to use them even when they are on the move.

Besides this the most significant factor is price of the tablets that is lower than notebooks and PCs because of which it has become easier for people to adopt slate use. It would not be a surprise if the number of tablet owners in America doubles by next year.
