Facebook made a major announcement on Thursday, June 20th when it declared at a press event that it is going to add video to Instagram along with all new features. The announcement indicates that Facebook is now all set to directly compete with Twitter’s Vine, a video sharing application, which is getting quite popular among users. However, now Facebook’s Instagram will also enable its users to add small video clips along with images. On this occasion, cofounder Kevin Systrom said that, “Over the past two and a half years, Instagram has become a community where you can capture and share the world’s moments simply and beautifully. Some moments, however, need more than a static image to come to life. Until now these stories have been missing from Instagram.”

At the same time Systrom also mentioned that no changes will be made to their photo system, as he said that, “We’re still committed to making sure you have control over all of your content.”

Initially Facebook made this feature available in its newly updated iOS app that boasts a special button to capture video with which users will be able to shoot 3 to 15 second long videos by using numerous clips. At this event, Facebook also made it known that the social network joined hands with an artist to specially create 13 new custom filters that are specifically designed for video. Moreover, a number of top experts were also used to incorporate “mind blowing” cinematic video stabilization features in the app, a unique trait that is hard to find in other apps.

“So what does this mean for your content? Nothing’s different from photos. We’re still committed to making sure you have control over all of your content. Only the people who you let see your photos will be able to see your videos. And as with photos, you own your videos. You can learn more about Video on Instagram—including our new Cinema feature—by visiting the Instagram Help Center.”

As far as finding and using the newly added video feature of Instagram is concerned, all users need to do is to “go to take a photo on Instagram, you’ll now see a movie camera icon. Tap it to enter video mode, where you can take up to fifteen seconds of video through the Instagram camera. You’ll also find that we’ve added thirteen filters built specifically for video so you can keep sharing beautiful content on Instagram. When you post a video, you’ll also be able to select your favourite scene from what you’ve recorded as your cover image so your videos are beautiful even when they’re not playing.”
