ATK or Alliant Techsystems Inc on Tuesday won orbital sciences order for space transport vehicle. According to this order the company needs to provide solid rocket motors for new air-launched system of space transport. This system is the major part of co-founder of Microsoft Paul Allen’s latest venture.

ATK is a well-known global aerospace, defense and commercial products company delivering best and affordable products and innovative solutions to the customers of the world. The company started its operation in 1990, when the shareholders took the entire defense business of Honeywell. For 50 years Honeywell supplied defense products and materials to the United States and its allies. Then with the acquisition of Hercules Aerospace Company and Thiokol Propulsion in 1995 and 2001 respectively, Honeywell expanded its business in the aerospace market. The company has made its presence in the aerospace, defense and commercial ammunition market by winning a number of other acquisitions and significant contracts.

Now the company has won another big orbital sciences order that will take it on to the heights of success.  President of ATK Aerospace Group, Blake Larson, gave no detail on to the total size and the scope of the entire contract, but according to him this deal was “certainly substantial”.

“It further enhances and expands other commercial elements of our propulsion business,” Larson said. ATK will take more projects in order to strengthen its portfolio. The company will try to take these projects when the budget of the U.S. military is set to squash or turn down.

Orbital Science has made no immediate commitment from ATK. It is the plan of ATK to trap Orbital Science in coming June that helps them to develop the new transport system by using an aircraft that will in space let them launch satellites, cargo and possibly humans.

The first test flight will be launched in 2016, as per the latest plan of Stratolaunch. In 2017 or 2018 its first mission may fly. Till now ATK has designed and develop more than 1600 solid rocket motors for different space transport systems. Some of them are Orbital Sciences’ Pegasus, Taurus, Minotaur and Antares launch vehicles.
