It seems that instead of bringing the prices of the 4k displays down, electronics manufacturers are more concerned in winning the race to develop high resolution small screens for devices like smartphones and tablets. This can be clearly judged from the latest move from the South Korean company LG, which has revealed tje world’s first ever 5.5-inch display that has a 2560×1440 resolution, which gives it an insane 538ppi pixel density. The company announced the new display on Wednesday, August 21st through official press release in which LG has referred the 2560×1440 resolution of this latest 5.5-inch screen as ‘Quad HD’. To be more precise it is referred as ‘Quad 720p HD’ because the number of pixels on the screen are equal to four 1280×720 displays.

Shedding light on the latest development of his company, the Vice President and Head of LG Display’s IT and Mobile Development Group, Dr. Byeong-koo Kim said in a statement that, “LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with introduction of the world’s first Full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology. With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market.”

Below are few excerpts from the press release of LG in which the Korean OEM has described the new displays as:

“LG Display’s Quad HD panel for smartphones realizes clearer images with 4 times more pixels than HD at 1,280X720, thereby reproducing more delicate colours as well as improving contrast and vividness when compared to current mobile displays. This advancement will enable consumers to fully enjoy more life-like and crisp images, and even Blu-ray equivalent video, on their smartphones. The panel also features the highest ppi among current mobile device displays.

In addition, the new Quad HD panel will enable users to enjoy a full view of PC-version web pages at a single glance without image distortion; a contrast to current Full HD displays which only realize 3/4th of a full screen. Also, even when enlarging the screen, users will be able to enjoy undistorted and sharper text.”

On this occasion LG has also made it known that the new Quad HD panel is not only the slimmest panel in the world, but it is also the narrowest panel produced by any company so far, as it is just 1.21 mm thin, whereas its bezels are 1.2 mm in LCD modules. This makes the new panel 12 percent less thick than the last Full HD display that LG has produced in July.
