Rumours have been swirling in the tech industry that the iOS device maker is looking to revamp Apple TV, since Apple’s CEO Tim Cook hinted that they wanted to change the experience of watching TV. According to the CEO today’s TVs are complicated and do not do a good job of delivering content. Apple has not revealed any other details since than about Apple TV but Quartz has now reported on Thursday, August 22nd that the California-based tech giant is in the middle of content negotiations for its rumoured next-gen Apple TV. The report also claimed that Apple is having talks with MTV, HBO, Disney and several other companies to launch a brand new TV service.
Quartz speculates that it may include a pay TV service that would turn Apple into a “cable company itself” and also the introduction of a “full-fledged television set”:
“One alternative being considered is that Apple could essentially become a cable company itself. Under that scenario, sources say, Apple would launch what is formally known as a virtual multichannel video programming distributor.
Apple is still interested in striking deals with cable companies that would allow people to plug their cable lines into the back of the TV set, bypassing a cable box, sources say. But at least two years of negotiations haven’t progressed very far.
Sources say Apple has concluded that it doesn’t need all, even most, content providers on board before it can release a TV set that people would buy. It just needs enough good programming to distinguish the new product, which will try to simplify the experience of connecting internet video to the TV.”
Quartz report has not revealed nothing new about Apple TV, as we have heard all these details same time during last year. However, it is quite possible that now Apple might be close to sign content deals with various companies in order to launch the next-gen Apple TV.
This speculation could turn out to be true, as recently Apple has acquired the services of former SVP of Hulu, Peter Distad, who has now officially joined the company in the capacity of Product Marketing VP. Moreover, it is anticipated that Distad will be the one who will negotiate the deals with media and cable companies for Apple TV.
If you think that this was all then think again, as recently Apple has also got hold of a video programming recommendation app, Matcha that enable users to browse through various services like Hulu, HBO, iTunes and Netflix.
