VMware announced on Monday, August 26th that it has hired former Chief Information Officer of Microsoft, Tony Scott, as its new Chief Information Officer (CIO). In his new role Scott have to take care of international IT operations of VMware. Besides being the new CIO of VMware, Scott will also hold the office of senior vice president at the company and he will report directly to the chief executive officer, Pat Gelsinger. Scott is joining VMware at a time when the company is facing some serious competition from leading e-commerce site Amazon and to deal with this situation the company has yet to determine a convincing strategy. At VMware, Scott will head the technical team of the company that takes care of the IT requirements of over 500,000 customers from across the globe.
Hopefully with the admission of Scott things will get better for VMware, as he has a vast experience in his field, which can be judged from the fact that prior joining this company he was working at Microsoft in the same capacity (CIO). According to Scott, he had left the job at Microsoft due to some personal reasons, but the software company was not only elite firm that Tony had joined in his career and before that he was the CIO of Walt Disney Co.
Below are few excerpts from the official announcement of VMware, which will give you more details on Scott:
“A long-time industry, Scott brings more than 30 years of experience running global IT operations for leading corporations. Most recently, Scott served as corporate vice president and chief information officer of Microsoft Corp, where he was responsible for security, infrastructure, messaging and business applications for all of Microsoft, including support of the product groups, the corporate business groups, and the global sales and marketing organization. Before joining Microsoft, Scott served as senior vice president and chief information officer of The Walt Disney Co., and chief technology officer at General Motors Corp.
Scott will report to Pat Gelsinger, VMware’s chief executive officer and from our announcement “Having a leader of Tony’s caliber join VMware is an example of the talent we are attracting to what is already a world-class VMware team,” Gelsinger said. “Tony will have responsibility for advancing and protecting VMware information assets, leading a team that is helping VMware meet the IT needs of more than 500,000 customers worldwide.”
Tony is a member of CIO magazine’s CIO Hall of Fame, Scott has a bachelor of science in information systems management from the University of San Francisco and also holds a juris doctorate from Santa Clara University.”
