Scott Kveton of Urban Airship, Patrick Lor of Dissolve, and Brian Wong of Kiip, all CEOs of successfully run companies were present at the Grow Conference 2013 where they discussed the techniques they use to nurture their companies and help it progress. They called this talk “Getting Out of the Weeds to Getting Shit Done.” Kveton shared that it is imperative to recognize the needs of your customers well in order to serve them and if the leaders do not realize this then the company’s development will suffer.
An important thing to keep in mind is that there will be a lot of low points for the company due to a number of reasons, for example unsuccessful advertising, demotivated workers etc but a competent CEO realizes that the company learns through past experiences and so these mistakes should be learnt from. Only when a CEO realizes this will he/she be able to nurture the company.
Similarly, Lor said that it is very important for employees to use the product themselves to know any problems that the user may be facing or improvements required in the product. This ensures that the company learns more and constantly improves itself.
TechVibes reports that, “Lor also discovered that the best way to get workers to accomplish tasks is by putting the customers first. He said: “I talked to a customer this morning and they said this button should be here,” Lor said, reenacting a conversation with his developers. “The lord has spoken there ought to be a button there.” This is another one of the golden lessons to be learnt coming from a CEO that companies should always act on feedback by consumers and strive to satisfy them. CEO must also understand the difference between a valued customer and a passerby leeching off bargains and benefits.
Wong adds that, “There are tons of companies that ask us, ‘oh I really want someone to watch this video so will you give them an incentive every time they watch the video with a free coupon? And I go absolutely not, that is not our business. By saying no to that we have traded off in a big way, because it has differentiated us from so many other companies.”
The leader’s duty is not just to motivate employees but also to manage and please their valued customers by interacting with them on a more personal level and showing them that the company cares. Regarding this Wong says : “It means a lot for you to reach out to your customers. That ten minutes when you are waiting at a security line—just shoot off fifty emails.”
According to Kveton, a successful CEO is supposed to ensure that all work gets completed in essence supervise efficiently and not personally do all the work. Therefore delegation of work is an important quality that a leader should possess.
All these tips and tricks should be made use of as they are the gist of what some very important people have learnt over the years.
