As many have heard, Apple won a six of their patent infringement cases against Samsung. The verdict was reached on August 25th, with Bloomberg being the first to report. The violations will cost the Korean smartphone maker an incredible $1.049 billion.

What many may not yet know however, is exactly which patents were violated. Many are basic functions built into our iPhones while others have to do with Apple’s smartphone designs. Here are the big six:

1. Utility Patent 163: Enlarging documents by tapping the screen

This patent protects the ability to double tap to enlarge or center text on the screen. The jury found Samsung in violation of this patent on 12 of their devices.

2. Utility Patent 381: The rubber band patent

Apple owns the bounce back that occurs when you scroll to the bottom of a page or app. Samsung was found to have violated this patent on 21 phone models.

3. Utility Patent 915: Distinguishes between single-touch and multi-touch gestures

When a phone’s touchscreen can distinguish between one finger and multiple finger gestures like pinch and zoom you must be an iPhone. Unsurprisingly, 21 Samsung phones were found in violation.

4. Design Patent 087: Ornamental design of White iPhone

This is one of the more controversial patents. Apple owns the patent to the fundamental shape and design of the white coloured iPhone. This is essentially a patent on a rectangular shaped phone. 12 phones were found to violate this design patent.

5. Design Patent 087: Ornamental design of Black iPhone

The shape and colour of the black iPhone was protected the same way the white one was.

6. Design Patent 305: Rounded square icons on interface

Apple owns the patent for square icons with rounded edges in terms of both design and shape. Samsung was found to have violated this patent with 13 phone models.

Steve Jobs is probably watching from above and have been smiling for almost a good week now following the verdict. Biographer Walter Isaacson, who penned the book Steve Jobs (a fantastic read) was once told the following by the innovator:

“Our lawsuit is saying, ‘Google you f*ing ripped off the iPhone, wholesale ripped us off. I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank to right this wrong. I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product.”

This was definitely a major step in this goal being achieved.
