Although their full-fledged battle for smartphone dominance cannot be denied, there is a chance that Google’s impressive browser Chrome (TQ’s unabashed favourite) may finally be coming to the App Store. The report comes from Macquarie analyst Ben Schacter, who reports that Apple may already be in the process of reviewing the application and that it may arrive as early as the end of 2012’s second quarter.

Although the news is exciting, we at TQ are waiting with baited breath. The likelihood of a fully capable Chrome browsing experience on an Apple product given their strict app policies is rather slim. We anticipate, along with other internet sources that the version of Chrome in question will most likely run as an interface to Apple’s Safari Mobile akin to current offerings such as Mozilla Firefox. This is fully in line with Apple’s policy that forbids any app from duplicating any of the default iOS apps, in this case Safari Mobile.

Although a great deal remains unknown at this time, the hope is that Google Chrome’s app would allow for Chrome Sync, providing access to the various bookmarks, links and other saved features from your Chrome browser on other devices.

All in all, the overall Chrome experience should feel rather familiar, if not limited. Both Safari and Chrome are engineered atop the same layout engine, the extremely popular WebKit.  The acceptance of the app by Apple would undoubtedly allow Google to reap some of the financial rewards that they are currently splitting with Apple via Safari searches and advertisements.
