A new iPhone application called 123D Catch allows you to take impressive 3D scans of an object using panoramic style photos taken by your mobile device.  The app, created by Autodesk allows users to take pictures and process them on iPads, PCs, various Web browsers and on now your iPhone since earlier this month.

The full 3D effect is achieved by users being able to take up to 40 shots of a given object in order to be uploaded onto Autodesk’s Cloud for full processing. The company’s cloud software allows photo by photo to be added to create an object. All three dimensions of the object are rotatable, allowing you to add photos as you desire for the most accurate 3D model possible.

Once created, models can be stored within user’s “MyCorner” cloud locker, allowing for sharing, refining and even printing with the aid of a 3D printer, such as a Makerbot. Although the results are not 100% perfect, they are extremely impressive considering that all the photos and processing can be done from an iPhone. The app, like most of Autodesk’s other 3D related apps is absolutely free bringing 3D modeling access to the masses.

Among Autodesk’s free apps, 123D Make, 123D Sculpt and 123D (desktop only) are worth checking out as well. The new iPhone app can be found here starting at my favourite price. Check out the 123D Catch video below.
