In order to better serve their growing number of mobile users, Oakville, Ontario based Pelmorex Media Inc. acquired Beat the Traffic. The latter is a Santa Clara, California based provider of vehicle traffic solutions for companies in the weather broadcasting business. Pelmorex owns and operates The Weather Network and MétéoMédia.

The acquisition is part of the company’s push behind its upcoming Travelers Network project. The service, which is scheduled for an October launch is a program catered towards internet and iOS devices. Beat the Traffic’s technology allows for the relay of real-time traffic and mapping information. The service is utilized by 31 television stations and is a considerable coup for the Canadian Pelmorex. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Travelers Network (Beta) will begin as a website based service before releasing a follow up iPhone application. A real time traffic service from a name with the clout and infrastructure of The Weather Network definitely makes for an ideal situation for users.

“Launching traveler-related services is a natural extension for us and it complements the highly successful weather-related services provided by The Weather Network and MétéoMédia,” said Mark Thompson, Managing Director of Travelers Network. “Our aim is to help consumers get from Point A to B, whether it’s around the corner or around the globe for all modes of travel. No other single provider offers this type of service.”

We at TQ are excited to see improved traffic services for volatile driving situations caused by formidable weather and traffic conditions.
