The Globe and Mail’s technology reporter, Omar El Akkad, caught up with Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, during a trip to Canada. Hastings discussed a number of topics with El Akkad including the Companies prospects in Canada. The Netflix head honcho was very bullish about his firm’s growth in the country but felt that ISP cap limits in Canada would be a problem.

Hastings started off by talking about the challenges his company will face going forward. The Netflix CEO was sure that as the internet grew and penetrated more households his company would have many chances to grow but the only way they could sustain their growth and top position was to stay ahead of the curve. He pointed at constant improvements as the major challenge that would be required like providing the highest quality video, the best collection of content and the best streaming to “stay on the leading edge.”

El Akkad also asked the Netflix CEO about differences he saw in the Canadian market and American markets. Hastings stated that there were many similarities all across the globe and that many shows were popular in every market. He went on to say that the Canadian and American markets had very few differences.

Hastings finally touched upon the topic of ISP cap limits in Canada and how he thought they might be the lowest in the developed world. The Netflix head was unable to understand why this was a trend with ISPs when other nations like the US offered either uncapped internet or very high caps. He hoped that Canadian broadband providers would catch up soon so that users could take full advantage of the abilities of the internet.

We at TQ certainly hope for the same as well. To watch the complete video of the interview click here.
