Research In Motion has been in a steep downfall over the past year as the companies iconic BlackBerry smartphone has lost market share to the likes of Apple, Google and Samsung. RIM was not going to sit back and watch as its competitors built a dominant lead and the firm decided to expand into other markets outside the smartphone sector.

Taking a cue from Apple’s iPad, RIM launched its own tablet devices called the Playbook. The tablet did not do anywhere near the numbers that would be needed for it to be called a success and dragged the already sinking fortunes of the company further down. RIM has finally announced a revamped phone along with the BB10 Operation System which is being marketed as the next big thing. However, the new devices are not expected until next year and it seems all RIM devices are dropping in price.

A week ago it was revealed that Walmart Canada slashed the prices for the 32GB playbook to $118. The device actually sold out quickly due to the extremely low price. Staples Canada was not going to be left behind and they dropped their prices to match Walmart today. Staples went one step further and dropped its 16GB PlayBook to $99 and made it a Hot Buy. The company also cut the price of the 64GB version of the Playbook to $219. From the latest updates from Staples, the $99 is sold out and the other version are probably going to sell out soon.

The $99 price has not been available to normal buyers until now. Last November, RIM had a fire sale and was offering the Playbook’s 16GB version to their employees for $99.
