Research In Motion (RIM) was reported to have gone shopping for domain names on last week as it gears up for an uphill climb back to relevance. The domain buying news was followed by industry analysts because bulk buying of domains by firms gives a good indication of what to expect from the company in the future. The BlackBerry maker is well known for the fact that it purchases a myriad of domains right before a big announcement and the latest shopping spree seems to indicate that the company will be making some sort of announcement about its highly anticipated BB10 operating system.
The list of domains can be found on this CrackBerry post and most readers will be able to see that several BB10 apps and branding strategies are easily revealed from the least. Terms like Peek, Flow, Newsstand, TimeShift and BBM Video are things that have been seen several times before and may just be RIM trying to gain more control of its brand.
Newsstand already exists and is definitely a domain that RIM should own to protect its brand. Names like voice control point to the functionality that has been seen in BB10 Dev Alpha. Leaked pictures have also shown a video editor called StoryMaker and this has now been verified by the domain name list. The list also points at the rumored video chatting, which may just be possible for the BlackBerry Messenger service in BlackBerry 10 and the Peek and Flow name is a reference to the BlackBerry 10 User Interface. Finally, the TimeShift name is probably a reference to the BlackBerry 10 camera and its Scalado integration.
CrackBerry has mentioned that BlackBerry Jam Americas may be the platform that RIM will use to make announcements or showcase products and features listed in the domain name purchases from RIM.
