Google owned YouTube announced yesterday that they are making it possible for your videos to be enjoyed in more than 300 languages. This will be done through the translation of video captions thanks to the integration of YouTube’s Video Manager with the Google Translator Toolkit. The feature is currently available automatically in approximately 50 languages. The expanded language collection requires more effort as captions have to be translated through Google’s Translation Toolkit.
According to Google, 70% of YouTube’s audience resides outside of the U.S. making multi-lingual content increasingly important for anyone looking to share their wares with as many people globally as possible. The tools are meant to work as aids for all of the service’s videographers looking to reach a wide ranging audience.
If you wish to use the tool to translate a video, the first step is the creation of a caption track. Once uploaded, captions can be translated line by line by clicking on the newly added ‘request translation’ option found in the YouTube Video Manager. The only added feature the previous 50 languages hold over the newly added rolodex is that a translated first draft will not be drafted for the newer languages. Videos can be watched as the translation process is ongoing to ensure the desired effect is continuing as videographers work though their content.
Google is to be commended as usual for their ability to bring the world closer through innovation and sharing.
