Combining features of Craigslist, social networking and eBay, Vancouver-based website Ayoudo is ready to expand to 50 cities across this great nation of ours. The innovate website and app is based around uniting those who are seeking help with those who are willing to provide help. The expansion will begin on the other end of the country in St. John’s, Newfoundland on June 25 and continue back towards B.C. by July 1, 2012.
The site is an easy way for people within a set geographic region to buy, sell and share services thereby creating social and beneficially interaction between its users. Although some may consider the service similar to Craigslist in that people may post for required services with a great deal of anonymity, Ayoudo integrates a user rating system to ensure that people share their experiences with parties involved in both sides of the transaction. Users must sign in with their Facebook accounts, allowing others within the community to view public profile information and confirm identities as they see fit, ensuring a higher level of security and assurance than services that have come before.
Founded by NowPublic founder Michael Tippett, Ayoudo launched in public beta February 1 of this year, and has seen its usership grow virally ever since. Tippett refers to his creating as “a social medium that lets you collaborate with people and help each other out. People use the application to get help in the garden, tune up their home office and take care of life’s little emergencies. But the application is also playing a critical role in getting help to people in a time of crisis.”
The final sentence above refers to Ayoudo’s efforts to aid in the Fraser River flood crisis earlier this year with its Help Action, connecting affected areas with the help that they needed in dealing with the disaster. The site was able to corral and put into action a slew of volunteers.
According to Tippett, the July 1 launch date is more than a mere coincidence. The day marks a watershed moment in Canadian media history, when in 1927 CBC broadcast a signal across the nation. Colour television was also introduced by CBC on that same day in 1966.
For those interested in trying Ayoudo out, we would encourage you to do so based on our experience with the site and service. The iPhone and iPad app are free on iTunes while an Android app is in the works.
