Canadian mobile users with friends south of the border know very well that the rates we pay for our mobile devices are criminally higher than those offered by American telcos. Unfortunately, this piece is not a grand proclamation that our rates are dropping to the levels of AT&T and Verizon (we can keep hoping). Those however who have a keen interest in acquiring the Samsung Galaxy S III should listen up.
Former Y Combinator darling Dropbox, a cloud storage provider in concert with Samsung is allowing each Canadian who purchases a Samsung S III a whopping 50 GB of cloud storage free for a 2 year period. All Canadian carriers who feature the S III have signed on, unlike Verizon and AT&T who opted out of a similar deal. Samsung confirmed the news for their new flagship product which has been available for sale inCanada since June 27, 2012.
All that is required from you as a new S III user is that you either create a Dropbox account or transfer your existing account to the phone via Samsung Apps. In doing so, 48 additional GB are added to your storage space over and above the standard 2 GB that are offered for free.
Given that 50 GB of Dropbox storage costs $99 per year, the savings and incentive are definitely there. All we have to add is that users should keep track of when their 2 years is up in order to consider whether they want to pay for the additional storage or politely opt out. Either way, with the way cloud storage is being adopted, we would not be surprised to see more competitive rates moving forward. Who knows where they will be in 2 years?
