Instagram has made the vintage picture a fad that has swept the mobile world. Other apps like Camera+ offer filters to give images the old fashioned look that many people crave. One Canadian company has developed an app that will give images a truly vintage look as opposed to the fake filter that other apps offer today. Ultimate Chemistry, a start up located in Ontario, has just launched Strut Type for Apple’s iOS. The app was developed by Christine Summers who has used her childhood experiences to build an application that gives all the effects that an actual vintage camera would have.

Summers used to spend a lot of time with her father in his amateur photo darkroom. Her father use a “strut type” accordion camera to take images which he then manipulated by using different light effects, shutter speeds, vignettes, and canvases. The camera is now over a hundred years old but is easily recognizable because of its unique accordion shape.

Strut Type, which has been launched as an app for both the iPhone and iPad, does not have filters like other camera applications. Instead it takes images and puts in effects that an actual vintage camera would have caused. For example, images will have watermarking, foxing, light leaks, and even mold collection. All these give the image a very authentic look that other apps are unable to achieve.

Summers, who is also the CEO of the company explains that, “The poor lighting conditions in the homes of that era inadvertently produced some great effects. The hand-blown glass of old windows created wavy patterns…and often the timing of the drop shutter produced some wonderful effects as did the texture of photo paper and the adhesive use in framing the photo. It was actually the technical ‘mistakes’ of the process that give turn-of-the-century photos their character.”

The app is meant for a niche market and will not be very good for people that want an app that can be used on all their images. However, for enthusiast that wants their images to look like the real deal, Strut Type may be just the right mobile app as it blends technology with old world effects.
