BlackBerry 10

Canada based maker of  BlackBerry smartphones, Research in Motion (RIM), has been in the news a lot lately and most of the headlines have been pointing at the upcoming release of the company’s new BlackBerry 10 operating system. RIM gave the world a glimpse of the BB10 at their developer’s conference called Blackberry Jam 2012. The presentations were very focused on the upcoming OS and it made sure to include app developers at every step in order to ensure their support for the upcoming devices. BB10 and the devices that will run the software are expected to be on shelves by early next year and RIM is banking on the latest crop of products to pull it out of the slump that it is currently enduring.

Infomart used tweets from Canadian starting September 24 to October 1 to get an idea of the sentiment about RIM during this time and have found some interesting insights. For example, the RIM love song for developers that was based on REO Speedwagon’s Keep on Loving You, caused a 23 per cent negative sentiment among twitter users. The corny nature of the song definitely rubbed some people the wrong way as indicated by tweets sent and re-tweeted. However, the majority of people were very positive on Twitter about the company, smartphones and OS as well as the future of the company.

The time period Infomart analyzed included the Blackberry Jam as well as an earnings report. Many expected the report to be another extremely bad one for RIM but the company surprised the market by not showing as large a loss as expected.Although there was a 31 per cent drop in quarterly earnings, the total was not close to the massive loss market analysts expected. As a result, the share price of the company improved as did the sentiments expressed on the Twitter ecosystem, where users had positive thoughts about the news.

Infomart sampled 600 random RIM related tweets in all. An analysis of the tweets showed that 44 per cent were positive, 23 per cent was negative and 33 per cent were neutral tweets about the Canadian company. Industry analysts seem excited to see what BB10 has to offer and here’s hoping that it exceeds expectations providing another quality option for the ever growing list of smartphone users.
