At the beginning of this month, digital music service Rdio announced the start of its Rdio Artist Program. The start-up claimed that the unique program “could change the face of digital music as we know it” because it allowed artists to make money directly from streaming music through the Rdio platform.

The way the setup works is that Rdio allows artists to promote their music by sharing it with their fans. The artist can also recommend other songs to their followers, allowing them access to the music that they listen to. The recommending of songs and artists can be done through Rdio or via social networking sites Twitter and Facebook. The best part of sharing is that the artist will get paid $10 for each new subscriber that comes to Rdio through the social sharing feature.

Janus Friis, Rdio founder who is also the creator of Skype said that, “There is no art without artists. As part of this industry, we know a business that doesn’t reward its most important contributors is a business that has to change. The innovation of the Internet should not be a barrier to the success of music artists; it should allow them to be even more successful.”

Drew Larner, CEO of Rdio, explained the new program by saying, “All sorts of talented and innovative artists have found an audience for their music online. But it’s incredibly hard to make a living doing it. The Artist Program offers artists a way to supplement their existing revenue streams by doing what they do naturally—connecting with fans. We’re aligning our focus on social music discovery with our fundamental belief that artists deserve to get paid for their work. We view it as a significant step forward for artists, fans and streaming music.”

The startup was launched in 2010 and is headquartered in San Francisco, USA and has stated that the Rdio Artist Program will be available in all the 14 countries Rdio has expanded its services to including Canada. The streaming music service’s new program excited rapper Snoop Dogg who spoke about the program and said, “Up-and-coming artists are the future—they’re the lifeblood of the industry. I love that any new artist can take advantage of this program. I’m a fan of Rdio already and it’s cool to see them supporting artists like this.”

We in our humble opinion couldn’t agree more with the newly minted Mr. Snoop Lion.
