Samsung had not been very open about the Galaxy S III Mini since rumors started hitting news outlets that a smaller version of the Korean firm’s best selling smartphone was in the works (TQ was on it). Eventually Samsung mobile chief JK Shin stated that the smaller phone would be launched at an event in Germany because their research showed the demand for a smaller phone was high in Europe. On October 11, Engadget was able to get a look at the phone and played around with the device to get a feel of what Samsung was able to out in the Galaxy SIII mini which has a four inch screen.
In Germany it became clear that the new device is not only smaller than the S III but also has mid-level specs compared to the high end S III. As far as design is concerned, the Korean electronics manufacturer is sticking to the same look of the Galaxy SIII and Galaxy note. The company’s research has shown that the marketplace had a demand for a phone that was smaller and fit easily into hands and pockets but kept the design elements of the bigger devices.
As far as processing is concerned, the phone has a 1GHz dual-core processor, with 1GB RAM, a 4-inch, WVGA AMOLED screen and 32GB max of memory. In terms of operating system, the device will be powered by Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean along with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface. There is no news on whether the new smartphone will be available in the US or Canada but it seems that Samsung will see how the products does in Europe before it decides on expanding to other markets.
